  • The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, now called Keoladeo National Park, is regarded as the biggest bird sanctuary in India and Asia. The Sanctuary covers an area of about 1.30 sq. km.
  • According to the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), India has about 1210 different bird species and 72 bird sanctuaries.
  • The most famous bird sanctuary is Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary in Haryana, which spans a massive 1.43 sq. km. of land. It is one of India's most popular and well-known bird sanctuaries.
  • Vedanthangal bird sanctuary in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, is probably the smallest bird sanctuary in India. The Sanctuary is believed to have about 40,000 birds, out of which 26 species are rare. Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Pune district, Maharashtra, is also a small Sanctuary spread over just about five square kilometers.
